five-fold-ministry-q&A

Note: Doug Klinedinst will be teaching on the subject: Flowing With The Spirit at the General Conference in Nashville, TN. He will present the Five-Fold Ministry and the Gifts Of The Spirit from the spiritual flow paradigm

  • Thursday 10:00 – 10:50 AM
  • Room 205 A

Q: What is your definition of the Five-Fold ministry?

  • Five uniquely defined ministry offices or “gifts” given to the body of Christ for the perfecting of the saints for work of the ministry, for edifying the body of Christ, to bring unity, to bring the knowledge of the son of God and to bring us into the full measure and stature of the man Christ Jesus.
  • Apostles – Initiate spiritual flow
  • Prophets – Direct spiritual flow
  • Evangelist – Reap spiritual flow
  • Pastors – Build spiritual flow
  • Teachers – Validate spiritual flow

Q: Ho do you perceive acceptance of the Five-Fold ministry in the UPCI today?

  • We have accepted the Five-Fold ministry in theory more than in practice, and even less in declaration.
  • We are certainly more open to the idea and operation of the prophetic than ever before.

Q: How should the validity of the Five-Fold ministry be judged?

  • By fruit, by elders, by peers, and by the Holy Spirit bearing witness.

Q: What is the difference between Jesus' 12 Apostles and the Apostles of Today?

  • The 12 Apostles (I would include Paul as the 12th Apostle, replacing Judas instead of Mathias) could be called the "Apostles Of The Lamb" as a way to distinguish them and their uniqueness.
  • Apostles today are only Apostles as they continue in the apostleship given by the original 12. New Testament apostles do not write scripture or propose NEW Doctrines. We continue in the apostles’ doctrine and the faith once delivered.
  • Example: "We are the sons of God." This only holds true as we continue in the "Sonship" of Jesus Christ. We are not THE Son of God, nor can we become sons of God without Him. We must enter into and continue in His Sonship.

Three Classifications Of Apostles

  • Jesus – The First Apostle – Ephesians 2:20
  • The Twelve – Apostles Of The Lamb – Revelation 21:14
    • Authority to write scripture – John 17:20
    • Their names in the foundation of New Jerusalem – Revelation 21:14
    • Each saw Jesus in person (including Paul)  – 1 Corinthians 1:9
  • Modern Day Apostles – Ephesians 4:11

Q: On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate the UPCI in recognizing, respecting, and receiving the prophetic ministry and explain your rating?

  • 6 – We have crossed over from being anti-prophets or non-prophet to a place of passive acceptance. We mostly recognize older ministers or even dead ministers as prophets!

Q: What are the strengths and/or weaknesses of the UPCI in terms of facilitating prophetic ministry?

  • Strength: Some districts have actively and purposely brought the prophetic office into camps, conferences and meetings to facilitate a better flow of the Spirit.
  • Weakness: We are afraid of the title, "Prophet." We are also afraid of the title, "Apostle."

Q: What are some of your personal frustrations regarding prophetic ministry?

  • Some expect prophets to come into the local church and call out troublemakers and/or problem situations and fix them with a prophetic word. This is not the purpose of the prophetic office.
  • Because of the limitations we place on prophetic ministry, it is frustrating to be in meetings that reach a moment of divine visitation and demonstration, and nobody leading knows what to do next!

Q: How can the Five-Fold ministry operate more effectively within the structure of the UPCI?

  • Those in Five-Fold ministry offices need to submit to district and national officials in matters of organizational business.
  • Organizational officials need to submit to the God-given spiritual authority of a minister who has it, even if that minister does not hold an elected office with a title.
  • We must learn the concept of submitting one to another.

Q: What could a pastor, a district superintendent, or a general superintendent do to facilitate the Five-Fold ministry?

  • Purposely identify and present the Five-Fold ministry gifts to their local church by inviting these ministers to key meetings in a timely fashion.

Q: How far has the UPCI come during your ministry in engaging the prophetic? What has set us back? What positive signs are you seeing?

  • I think we have come a long way. We used to call everything discernment, and prophets were ministers who called people out in church. Certainly we have a much greater understanding and better definitions now.

Q: What is the role of the prophet in the 21st century apostolic church?

  • To assist the church and ministers with Spiritual flow by providing direction as to what should be next. Also, a prophet can show how an event fits the circumstances by identifying the spiritual purpose behind the things that are happening.
  • "Navie" (prophet) – "Nava" root…"to flow, or gush forth"

Q: What are your concerns for the church if we continue operating the Five-Fold ministry as we currently are?

  • The elders are dying off, and we have not maintained the proper pace of raising up and identifying new elders. The body lacks understanding of the times. We need clearer direction as to why things are they way they are and what our response should be.
  • The prophetic voice can help fill this void.
  • Diminished flow is a negative result of not enhancing our understanding and functionality of the Five-Fold ministry!

Q: What is the biggest occupational hazard of having a gifting in prophetic ministry?

  • Speaking something that is not politically correct and losing your source of income, and being shunned by the ministerial body.

Q: What would be the utopian understanding in the UPCI for the operation of the prophetic?

  • Prophets assist with spiritual flow. They are needed to allow anointing and spiritual power to reach its fullest potential in any given circumstance.
  • Every meeting should have an identified prophetic voice (or voices) present.
  • Prophetic gifting needs to be invited into circumstances. They should not be expected to insert themselves if they have a word.

Q: How can prophetic ministries work together to encourage positive change?

  • Respect each other, make room for each other and try to develop and follow an agreed upon operational integrity.
